  • The hard court sports arena we funded was officially opened in March 2010 in Sierra Leone
  • We sponsored the Ballysillan YFC Football Camp in Belfast
  • We have increased the number of Regional Co-ordinators we have but are always looking for more!
  • We have received continued support from PUMA UK as well as other manufacturers such as The Great Branding Company, Tempest Sports, DPM Sports and Kitlocker
  • We have also received tremendous support from:  Liverpool FC, Watford FC, Tranmere Rovers FC, Partick Thistle FC, Stenhousemuir FC, Bishop’s Stortford FC, Chesham United FC, fc United of Manchester, Witton Albion FC, Loordswood United FC, Sheffield FC, Fleet Town FC and many hundreds of “grass roots” clubs from all across the UK

Saturday, 4 December 2010

Thanks to all of our volunteers today who joined us for our final boxing up session of the year.  It was a great way to end a record breaking year for KitAid.

We should start a sweepstake in January but if we had one at the start of this year I don’t think we could have predicted that we would finish 2010 by sending out a record breaking 963 boxes.  This amounts to 33,705 items of kit that we have received, sorted and boxed up.  A fantastic achievement and really good fun as well.  Incredible to think of 33,705 smiles across the world.

Today’s session resulted in kit being delivered to Tanzania, Ghana, Burundi, Mauritius, Ukraine, Gambia and Eritrea.

Special thanks to Sean and Paul who had to unload 4,000 footballs and then load 25 boxes on to the 5speed lorry.  We now have over 6,000 footballs in stock which should keep us going for the next few years.

At the next session we will have some volunteers from the University of Herts, which should help and we may even stretch to two boxing up sessions per month.

Thanks for all your help in 2010 and have a fantastic Christmas

CHARITIES COLLABORATE TO HELP COMMUNITIES

This week KitAid received a huge donation of footballs from Mando, Aylesbury.  The balls had originally been donated to assist small charity, Greenfields Africa, which seeks to help people living in poverty in poor African townships. They had ample to meet their needs and kindly offered to share the footballs with us.  So we're 3,000 footballs better off and very pleased as we know how much the children love them.

To date Greenfields have built a church and community centre, which contains a permanent eye clinic and several soup kitchens, along with decent housing, communal washrooms etc., in the Greenfields Township of South Africa.

The also support the George Football League, which is open to all young people and is particularly supportive of young people in the Thembalethu Township.

GREATLY NEEDED FUNDS DONATED

Many thanks to our Patron, Graham Taylor OBE and Trinity Catholic School, Aspley, Nottingham.  Graham kindly did a talk at the school and they donated a total of £725.10 and a whole lot of kit.

This is fantastic news as due to the volume of kit we now send out, our funds have been gradually going down due to the number of footballs we've had to purchase to stuff in with the boxes.

Our thanks go to Headteacher, Michael McKeever and Assistant Head, Steve Manderson and all staff, children and parents who have helped.

A C HOYLAKE PROUD TO SUPPORT KITAID

Thank you to Janet Neville, our regional co-ordinator for The Wirral/Merseyside, for arranging KitAid sponsorship for her son’s team.  A C Hoylake now proudly wear our logo on their shirts.

We now have teams all across the country and even in Bulgaria sporting the KitAid logo.  If your team is struggling for shirt sponsorship then why not follow others and help to publicise KitAid at the same time.

RUBY WEDDING WINNER

We are very grateful to Janet Neville’s parents in law who recently celebrated their Ruby wedding and held a party for friends and family. They asked for donations to KitAid rather than presents and collected an amazing £500.

The money raised will be supporting next year's football camp in Ballysillan - a fantastic project organised by Peter Thompson to provide a fun week of football for boys in the area.

Many thanks to May and Harry Neville, and all their friends and family.

MORE BOXES PACKED AND ON THEIR WAY

Thanks very much to all our volunteers for helping this morning at another great boxing up session.

Pleased to see new helpers - Matthew Hunter, who supports Coventry City.
In total we filled 95 boxes, 52 of which left for Africa/Eastern Europe and the remainder are in storage awaiting despatch. So far this year we have now sent out an amazing 845 boxes of kit, which by my reckoning amounts to 29,500 items of kit. If anyone demands a recount please arrange it with Sean! This is a fantastic achievement and it wouldn’t happen if we didn’t have your support.

Look forward to seeing you at the December session.

Derrick

KITAID REACHES THE KIDS ALIVE PROJECT, ETHIOPIA

On 14th August, 9 volunteers, 7 from Northern Ireland and 2 from London, set off for Bekoji in Ethiopia, 9 hours east of Addis Ababa to visit the Kids Alive school in the town.

Many sports were played including rounders, football and ultimate frisbee. A game which was definitely new to Ethiopia was one which came to be known as 'Extreme Ball'. This involved a large exercise ball, very few rules and around 20 children in each team!

On the final day, the children took part in a sports day finale which was a great success. After they had all eaten lunch they were presented with gifts from the Kids Alive team. The gifts were schoolbags full of goodies like pens, pencils, juice, biscuits and even a wind-up torch each! Each child also received a t-shirt or football top donated by KitAid which many of them were incredibly excited about! There were even enough kits to donate a set to the headmaster of the school to use as an official team kit.

789 BOXES OF KIT SENT SO FAR THIS YEAR

Thanks to everyone for your help with boxing up today.

It was good to see Tania Boltonand it is always nice to see our Regional Co-ordinators attending as they mostly have to travel long distances. Good also to see John Maxwell who covers Swindon/Birmingham and Tim who covers Bishops Stortford.

Well the fantastic news is that we have broken all previous records as after today’s session we have now sent out 789 boxes in 2010, compared to last year’s record of 750. This works out to 27,615 items of kit and we still have 3 months of the year to go. Let’s see if we can reach 1,000!

112 boxes were sent out today, destined for Burkina Faso, Burundi, The Gambia, South Africa, Ghana and Eastern Europe. Not bad for 2.5 hours work so well done and thank to everyone.

The KitAid ball keeps rolling!

82 BOXES PACKED BY OUR CHAMPION VOLUNTEERS

Our merry team of volunteers packed 82 boxes full of kit this morning.  In just over two hours the packing exercise was seamless and the store cupboard has some breathing space. I
n total we've now sent out 675 boxes in 2010, approximately 23,500 items of kit, as well as other things such as goal posts, footballs, sports bags and footy cards.  Quite amazing and we will easily beat last year's figure of 25,500.

Thanks to Mike and Jonathan Pocock for joining our team for the first time today.
Well done team

A TOP SCORE FOR KITAID AND CHESHAM UTD

Many thanks to Chesham United FC and the fans for supporting KitAid at their match against Tiverton on 2 September. Fans donating no longer wanted football kit at the match were given a £1 discount on the match day ticket price.

Appropriately with the England versus Bulgaria game that weekend, one of Chesham United's previous KitAid collections was used to support Bulgarian children at FC Gagarin who now turn out each week in Chesham's colours.

KitAid was pleased with the kit collected and no doubt Chesham fans were delighted with the score on the day - 5 - 0!

Well done and all the best in your new league.

CHERNOBYL LINK VISIT TO VEOLIA WATER EDUCATION CENTRE

Following a donation of England shirts to the Chiltern group of the Chernobyl Link Project, the visiting children were invited along to Veolia Water's Education Centre in Bushey.

The children had a fantastic time enjoying the nature trail and pond dipping and also left with some more football tops donated by PUMA.

Thanks to Veolia Water for hosting the visit.

BALLYSILLAN YFC, BELFAST

KitAid sponsored a fantastic week-long football camp for the second year running in Ballysillan, North Belfast.  The project is run by Peter Thompson along with 30 volunteer coaches. Petere does a fantastic job bringing children together from different backgrounds.

Steve Johnson and Derrick Williams from KitAid visited on the final day of the camp and took part in the infamous gauntlet run, where 50 kids fire footballs at the coaches as they run down a narrow channel.  Northern Ireland won the World Cup final on penalties against last year's winners, Togo.

Well done to Peter and his team for another brilliant week.

20,000 KITS DONATED THIS YEAR

Many thanks to our amazing Boxing Team for their help this morning. It was hot and tiring, but we still managed to set a new record of 109 boxes leaving the building in Hatfield for South Africa, Burkina Faso, Gambia and Nepal. Not bad for a few hours work!

This brings the total amount sent out in 2010 to exactly 500 boxes, approximately 20,000 items of kit. At this rate we should easily beat last year's final figure of 725 boxes.

Thanks to Sean McGuigan who got in extra early (07.30am) to meet the guy who drops off the boxes.

CARDIFF CITY IN NAIROBI

Loresho Football Club were the second delivery of the day. The team are newly established and are building three adult teams to play in the local leagues. The players all come from Kangemi slum and train at the Nairobi Police camp.

Looking good in their Cardiff City kit.

CHILDREN IN AFRICA'S LARGEST SLUM RECEIVE FOOTBALL KIT

Day 4 - and in the team go to Kibera, Africa's largest slum where nearly a million people live in an area less than three square miles.  Joined by the BBC, the team went to Stara School in the heart of the slum.

Although some of the area now has limited electricity and piped water, there is no sewerage system.  After visiting the children in their corrugated metal classrooms, kits were handed out to the 500 children (371 of whom are orphans and one in 10 children who were HIV+).

Thanks also to eight year old Thomas Charley to handed out pencils and crayons to the children at the school and to his Dad, Warrant Officer Wayne Charley for his driving skills, knowledge of Nairobi and energy in getting us to some very difficult places to reach.

CHILDREN IN NORTH MATHARE WEAR KIT FROM HITCHIN

On the third day of the joint charities mission, the team battled across mud and potholes to reach Mogra Star Academy, North Mathare.  The school has 964 children who all come from a neighbouring slum area called 'Jangwani' or desert (population of 6,000).

Founded in 1999 by Hannah Warimu, the school provides free education and food for the children.  After handing over the kit, the team visited the slum and saw the homes and living conditions of Jangwani.

Particularly inspiring was Monica Makumo who having been abandoned at the age of 4 years was taken into the school from the streets in 2003. Monica is now the Children’s President at the Kenyan Parliament and is determined to become a Human Rights Lawyer.

Photo shows children wearing kit donated by Hitchin Town FC, a long time supporter of KitAid and Mary Exton School, Hitchin.

Greatly needed school equipment including pens, pencils, books, sewing equipment and materials were donated by Chessbrook Education Support Centre in West Watford.

MEETING CHILDREN & STAFF AT SAIDA CHILDREN'S HOME

Football team (KitAid, RAF's Taking Football to Africa and beyond and the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation) spent the day at SAIDA Children's Home, Gil Gil, about one and a half hours north of Nairobi, donating football kit and cuddly toys from Ipswich Town FC.
The home is run by Jane Kinuthia and opened in April 2004. It houses 52 children, most of whom are abandoned or abused children. Saida means ‘help’ in Swahili.  There's a small nursery at the home and its also houses primary and secondary children. The home also runs two outreach programmes in Gilgil including a feeding programme for 76 children and a 'Granny Club' which relies on older ladies providing shelter and support for young children. The project looks after around 300 children and is self sufficient relying on charitable donations.

CHARITIES JOIN FORCES TO BRING A TOUCH OF FOOTBALL TO KENYA

Representatives of KitAid (Derrick Williams & Sally Howe) joined RAF Shawbury based 'Taking Football to Africa and Beyond' (Squadron Leader Neil Hope and Senior Aircraftsmen Ben Burton), Mark Robson of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and Dave Queen from Thomas Adams School in Wem to make football shirt deliveries in  Kenya.

The first delivery was at the Kibagare Good News Centre in Nairobi, which sits in a slum township with no running water, sewerage or electricity. The centre houses St Martins Nursery and Primary school and also a girls Secondary School. The centre is run by Sister Leah Wambui Kimani who works tirelessly to support children mainly from Kibagare slums. The children are taught and fed, twice a day, at the school at a cost of  500 Kenyan schillings per term, which is effectively £4 each.  The 500 primary and 185 secondary children also have access to medical help as the centre houses a small chemist dispensary and lab.

Many of the kits donated on the day were Newcastle shirts left by fans at St James Park in memory of Sir Bobby Robson.

"It was a fantastic sight to see so many children wearing the black and white stripes and enjoying their football," said Mark.

A MESSAGE FROM GRAHAM TAYLOR, OUR PATRON, AS HE HEADS OFF TO THE WORLD CUP

KitAid – South Africa – World Cup. Three into one makes for a fantastic opportunity to see the top footballers in the world, playing in a country hosting the tournament for the first time, whilst not forgetting there is a poverty level that needs support and encouragement.

KitAid does that by a regular supply of football kit donated from all over Britain. To see the smiles on the faces of so many youngsters is like winning the equivalent of the World Cup!

BEST WISHES TO JULIA WHO'S OFF TO SOUTH AFRICA

Julia, one of KitAid's trustees, is heading off to the World Cup next week as a volunteer throughout the tournament.

We've donated a football ticket to Joseph, a South African who lives in one of the poor townships in Jo burg (called OrangeFarm) to join her at the England v USA match. Joseph has helped Julia distribute kit to Orange Farm schools. Joe , like eveyone else in the townships has no money for extras in life. So this will be fab for him. He is aged about 45 has never ever been to a match but knows everything about football and plays himself. He works hard supporting his wife, 3 kids and grandchild in his small ghetto home.

Enjoy the football Joseph and thanks for your help over the years.

ANY SPARE MATCH ATTAX?

We're collecting Match Attax cards to batch up and take with us to Kenya. The children love them, so if you've got a few spares and want to to see the put to good use, send them to KitAid, c/o Veolia Water, Tamblin Way, Hatfield, Herts.

Be quick - we're leaving on the 6 June.

Another six boxes are currently making their way to the Kenyan capital.

The quartet, teachers, Joseph Odhong and Kenedy Ochola and students, Edwin Otieno Juma and Millicent achieng Odera are currently in England from Miriu school visiting the Wem school, who provide much needed aid and sponsorship to the Kenyan youngsters.

Children in Nepal receive new kits

Just heard from Jolana Whyte, who is currently working on a project in Nepal.  KitAid donated kits which have been donated to the Youth Club of Aandhimul village and Bandipur.

Jolana writes: "The political situation this month has been very difficult and the country has been on stand still, no transport, no shops all shut for 6 days and there are further strikes expected. As the streets got quieter they got filled with children playing football, cricket and badminton, lifting the heavy mood of the country".
